Ladies Arm Wrestling and Freret Market

March 21, 2010

My friend Morgan clued me in on a little gem in the Marigny this past Friday night. Allways Lounge & Marigny Theatre hosted a charity event put on by NO LAW. That’s right, a bunch of chicks from New Orleans got together and arm wrestled for charity. And they let us watch. The event was free, the wrestlers and celebrity judges were in character (Sarah Palin in a patriotic bikini and standard French twist, Amy Winehouse sitting up straight for once, and She-Elvis), and the money from placing bets on the wrestlers went to Liberty House, a transitional living program for young women who are homeless with children.

Recycling is sexy.

In less dark-and-smoky and more daytime-sunshiny news, solojones will have a booth at the Freret Market on April 3rd. Basics Underneath carries silk and salvaged solojones, and now salvaged jones will be making its debut in the craft market world. I’m also contemplating other remade items, like aprons and pieced quilts and onesies, using only fabric that has had a previous life. New Orleans will be the place to do it. This city loves recycling and reusing. Habitat Restore has an amazing collection of doors, shutters, windows, mantles and tubs that have been pulled from homes in the area. Plan B is a rescue and reuse shop for bikes and parts, giving a workspace and tools to the community to use. I love the idea of giving a new life to something that has outgrown its old life, perhaps a little similar to what I’ve done with myself in the last couple months. Time to renew and recreate. Ready set go.
