Wednesday at the Square

March 24, 2010

Walter "Wolfman" Washington, Johnny Sansone, Anders Osborne

I love the middle of the week in New Orleans. Tuesday night Anders Osborne played at Chickie Wah Wah with Walter “Wolfman” Washington (sitting in for John Fohl) and Johnny Sansone. Unlike many NOLA bars, Chickie Wah Wah is non-smoking and has tables! It’s a lovely, intimate setting to watch incredible musicians talk to each other with their instruments. It was my first time to see Anders Osborne, and he left little to be desired. If you have a second, give a listen to Coming Down.

Wednesday at the Square

Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue, Wednesday at the Square

Wednesday nights until June will likely be spent at Lafayette Square. The YLC puts on Wednesday at the Square free of charge. The event was initially started to stimulate economic development downtown after Katrina. Attendees are encouraged to buy concessions of course, and I supported the event by drinking an Abita Turbodog. Tonight’s event featured Mia Borders who opened for Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews. Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue is probably my favorite group I’ve seen in the city. Trombone Shorty loves for his band to improv, and he loves to showcase each member’s talents. They all seem to enjoy each other so much. After listening to horn-heavy, guitar driven funk, his 10-minute, trumpeted lyric rendition of “Let’s Get It On” by Marvin Gaye was a great way to cap off my evening, hop on my bike and pedal for home, glowing from the knowledge that there is not a thing that’s square about Wednesday in New Orleans.
