This Is Just to Say by William Carlos Williams

January 26, 2011

Tempting berries (not plums) left on the table at Adobe on Green Street, the B&B I stayed at in Santa Cruz right before bumping New Orleans to the top of the "should-move-to" destination cities.

This Is Just To Say

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
for breakfast

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold

The sunshine has started to look like spring time in New Orleans. We’ve had a couple nights that have dipped below the freezing point, but we’re in Carnival season, and spring is knock knock knocking on my drafty door.

I digress to my coworker’s confession: “Yesterday I stole a baby carrot from the refrigerator. Today I stole one too. They were very delicious and very sweet.” Her coy revelation reminded me of this William Carlos Williams poem, one of my favorite scribbles on a notepad, left on the counter.
