Shrooming in the Dosewallips Off Highway 101

September 27, 2012

Friends took me ‘shrooming in the Dosewallips off of Highway 101. Some of you are thinking incorrectly. I went into the woods to harvest Chanterelles. In my pocket I had a sharp knife and a bag to collect the fallen soldiers. It was my first time in the Dosewallips State Park which is about an hour from us between the edge of the Olympic National Park and the water of the Hood Canal. For people who are into stuff like beauty and nature and trees and crap like that, this place is magical.

Moss on Trees

The moss on the trees in the forest is different in the PNW. It hugs the tress like all the warm clothing people wear, much unlike the South where the moss hangs off like a sweaty tank top.

These are not the fungus we cut to eat, but this was pretty impressive. It was about the size of a record.

There are several little rivers that flow off the snow in the Olympic Mountains into the Hood Canal. We hiked along the Dosewallips River for a while. It was gorgeous, a blue green color.

Trees Sunlight

Mushrooms grow in forrest areas just like this. A little sunshine, canopied, ferny ground, wetness, and mother trees.

Tree Shells

These fun-guys grow out of downed trees. I secretly believe they’re oysters. They’re not.

Chanterelle Harvest

These are the Chanterelles I brought home. The limit is a gallon a day per person, and between the 3 of us we had about 3 gallons, although my mushroom eyes aren’t as good as our fearless leader. The mushrooms sing to him. I heard nothing.

In reading New to the Orleans, I find myself interested in how the chapters of your life change. From Orleans to Washington you seemingly haven’t changed but you are different. Enjoying the journey.
