Dangerously Close to the White Line

Manette, Washington

There’s a girl here in Manette, Washington (East Bremerton) who walks up and down Perry Avenue pushing an empty wheelchair. Rain or shine. Mostly rain, of course. The first time I saw her, I thought Aw, she’s probably visiting her grandfather. Or something.

And then, I saw her again.

You’ll never believe who I saw again! The wheel chair girl!

Twice! I couldn’t believe it. What are the chances of seeing the same girl on the same road pushing the same empty wheelchair?

Apparently pretty good chances. Now I see her about 30% of the time I drive down Perry. She always walks dangerously close to the white line on a road without sidewalks. She walks with such purpose, sometimes north on Perry, sometimes south. I saw her once all the way north of town pushing the empty wheelchair into the parking lot of the treatment center. Hat backwards. Long hair down her back. Oversized green sweatshirt.

Why is she pushing an empty wheelchair? This is not rhetorical. Answer me.
