Easy Mistake

Leonardo Da Vinci

Not Leonardo the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. Not Leonardo DiCaprio. Leonardo Da Vinci. Yes, Da Vinci.

The poet laureate from Washington, Kathleen Flenniken, visited our school on Friday. She presented a short program using Billy Collins‘ poem “Instructions to the Artist” and the famous image of the Mona Lisa.

“Who is this famous woman?”

“Mona Lisa!”

“And who painted the Mona Lisa?”

“Leonardo…” a few voices cried out and then trailed off.

“Leonardo who?”

“DiCaprio!” Three kids shouted the movie star’s last name, all in unison.

“Not DiCaprio.”

“Da Vinci!” One lone voice piped up from the back of the library casting a bit of shame on his classmates.

“Yes. Leonardo Da Vinci!”

Easy mistake.
